A pot that isn't centered will fight you through every stage after it. We teach the stages in order, slowly, because that's the only order that actually works.

STAGE TWO
Opening
A thumb goes into the center, straight down, not at an angle. This is where the walls start.
STAGE THREE
Pulling up
Compressing and thinning the wall in even passes, from the bottom up, not all at once.
STAGE FOUR
Shaping the rim
The last two inches decide whether it's a cup, a bowl, or a vase.
